"frostiis.synthetic" | #7 | 2004-11-26 10:21 (5.8 years ago)
One little question:

When you aim in vehicle with your gun does your crosshair stay still evethough vehicle is moving (like in ut2k4 onslaught) or is it same as in BF1942?
I wanted to know because in bf1942 its quite useless to sit in tank's mg as a gunner because you cant hit a s**t. That's not a big thingy but it could make the game a little bit better for passengers :)

It was so funny in bf42 to notice a plane but there was nothing to be done because your mad driver just kept turning turret around :)
rascal | Sweden | #8 | 2004-11-26 10:24 (5.8 years ago)
Hmm, I don´t know, didnt try it :) Im not a turret kinda guy, Im more of the mad driver turning the turret like crazy!
"frostiis.synthetic" | #9 | 2004-11-26 10:28 (5.8 years ago)
Hehe :D
Im still a bit worried about that stats system. frostiis.synthetic (the one who drives over team mates with a jeep) entered the server!
dB(A) | Netherlands | #10 | 2004-11-26 10:30 (5.8 years ago)
Well I finally managed to read the entire article (people looking over my shoulder all the time, grrr). A very interesting read. I'm looking very much forward to this one now.

Cudos to Rascal for writing an article that beats most news posts on the EA site or any other game related site! GJ!

I will have to wait for the movies until tonight. Save some bandwidth for me pls. :P

"Johan" | #14 | 2004-11-26 11:08 (5.8 years ago)
Wasn't you supposed to be able to play with 128-players (or if it was 100) in BF2?
In the interview it says 64!

Or was it just another thing EA/DICE promised us, that never will be in the game?
(Just like they did with BFV!)
rascal | Sweden | #15 | 2004-11-26 11:10 (5.8 years ago)
Dunno mate. But I´d be happy with just 64 players. It´s messy enough having 31 players tk:ing you on public servers when you run for the chopper :)
Roach | Sweden | #16 | 2004-11-26 12:00 (5.8 years ago)

It says THE MAPS are made for 16, 32 or 64 players....doesn't say anything about max # of players.
"Smartass" | #20 | 2004-11-26 13:11 (5.8 years ago)
I guess the BF2 clanmatches will be played 16vs16 then?
"tiggr" | #21 | 2004-11-26 13:13 (5.8 years ago)
squads of 5 each (3 squads) and one commander.. so 16vs16 yea.
dRD | Sweden | #22 | 2004-11-26 13:19 (5.8 years ago)
All maps comes in three different versions (scaled to 16, 32 and 64 player).

The clanmatches will probably continue to be played 8vs8/10vs10/12vs12 since all maps can be scaled down to be suitable for 16 or 32 players total and trying to arrange matches with 10-12 players is hard enough :)
"hest" | #23 | 2004-11-26 13:35 (5.8 years ago)
Dang! It looks just as detailed as the Source engine, but evidently it's capable of dealing with huge detailed areas. Amazing, impressive, fantastic!

Oh, btw. How powerful was the computers you ran the game on? I know it's kind of irrelevant right now as it's only an Alpha version but.. just curious?
"blankoboy" | #24 | 2004-11-26 13:35 (5.8 years ago)
Great stuff guys!

A few question if I may:

- Did you gather from DICE saying that the maps will scale to 16/32/64 players to mean that the 100 player limit has been reduced back down to 64?

- Although you guys didn't get to play with Voice comms too much did you happen to notice or inquire as to whether or not you will also be able to speak to other players in your immediate vicinity (friendly/foe) and not just over radio? It would be really cool to talk to your enemy as you are hunting him down or to whipser to your team mates. *3d positional sound.

- Any word on whether we will see CTF in BF2?

- How did the helicopter controls feel? Did they lean more to BFV than DC?
"blankoboy" | #25 | 2004-11-26 13:38 (5.8 years ago)
One other question if I may:

I've been dying to hear if BF2 will support downloads of custom maps from within the game server so players do not have to go hunt down and download a certain map from other sources to join a game in progress.

Thanks!
TNT | Finland | #26 | 2004-11-26 13:41 (5.8 years ago)
Excellent stuff ! I cannot wait for the real thing :)
"ThanhSa|Tux" | #27 | 2004-11-26 13:42 (5.8 years ago)
hm, i hope that commander feature really works. i personally don't like the idea of the radars seeing everything. i'd more prefer that the commander has to use loaches or special forces to check out areas. maybe even players on towers or stuff like that ...
"|RW|CobrA" | #28 | 2004-11-26 13:49 (5.8 years ago)
hmm... a good write up, and may thanks to you guys. Now I just want the game to be released so we can have some serious fun with it :)
"Krisdom" | #29 | 2004-11-26 13:52 (5.8 years ago)
great article, love reading up on BF 2, i think the commander mode sounds great, although personally i'd prefer to be a squad leader:D cant wait
"king0rism" | #30 | 2004-11-26 13:53 (5.8 years ago)
Nice to see EA allowing DICE doing so much work out to the community !!! THANK YOU ALL!
"Spotty" | #31 | 2004-11-26 14:08 (5.8 years ago)
Ooh, very nice!

Looks like a team will dependant on tactics and teamplay more then ever in bf2! It also looks like it has a steep learningcurve? If that's the case, it will show when a noob meets an experienced player a lot. Mohaha.

Very promising :]
"Dick Justice" | #32 | 2004-11-26 14:17 (5.8 years ago)
Excellent article there giving us a lot of insight on BF 2, including 2 major bummers:

-What happened to the promised 100 players/map ? If JO can pull off up to 150 players/map and even the crappy Soldner can get up to 100, why can´t DICE do it in BF 2 ?

-I´m not sure if I like the commander seeing everything ! I´d prefer if he only saw the "spotted" units and ones close the the radars...
"Birdseye" | #33 | 2004-11-26 14:27 (5.8 years ago)
Thanks for the excellent write up.

One quick, pickie question.

Will tanks and other vehicles be able to drive through as much as a puddle without losing 'life' ?
This is one of my biggest 'hates' of BF.

It takes a couple of shells to destroy a tank but the slightets touch of water and kaboom. ;)
exocet | France | #34 | 2004-11-26 14:31 (5.8 years ago)
great job guys! this article changed my mind on bf2
TNT | Finland | #35 | 2004-11-26 14:42 (5.8 years ago)
Birdseye:

To me it seemed that at least the Bradley was completely amphibious. Probably light tanks will have amphibious capabilities. They did it in Vietnam, so why not in BF2 :)
"Birdseye" | #36 | 2004-11-26 14:44 (5.8 years ago)
Thnx TNT
remf | United Kingdom | #37 | 2004-11-26 14:45 (5.8 years ago)
#33, well considering in one of the videos there was some sort of vehicle driving through some water, I'm guessing you should be ok.

"SonicJihad" | #40 | 2004-11-26 15:01 (5.8 years ago)
Very nice .....very nice.....very nice....
But it was hard 4 me to see the difference between the american and arab footsoldiers...They were almost the same colour, were they??
But overall damn what a nice game....ooh yeah question ,,,are the MEC command voices...as good or better as the DC ones???
dRD | Sweden | #41 | 2004-11-26 15:01 (5.8 years ago)

No, atleast not in the version we played. You could only talk to people in your squad, wich is kinda good when playing public.

Any word on whether we will see CTF in BF2?

We asked and the answer was no, not out of the box. This will probably be very easy for modmakers to implement with all the fancy tools being released with the game.
"[TCO]Slayer|Fin" | #42 | 2004-11-26 15:03 (5.8 years ago)
Just wondering: is it possible to play the movies captured by the recorder in first person view?

BF2 is gonna rock!

MuNcH | United States of America | #45 | 2004-11-26 15:39 (5.8 years ago)
I remember what I wanted to ask now....

Is the damage systems for the models location based? (i.e. Soldier of Fortune)
Will the player models show damage?

For example....

shot to the leg = slower movement
shot in the arm = inability to use two handed weapons
shot in the head = inability to stay alive

Driving a jeep and have a tire shot off = slower jeep

It seems like you'd be able to have immediate damage to the body that must be repaired (healed) before you can continue on your mission. I suppose this may take away from the arcade feel of the game, but it's logical to me due to the fact that a human can't be shot 10 times, be almost dead and still complete what he set out to do without help from the Medic.

And what's up with this?

Online multiplayer action with 100+ players on the PC.

Straight from
http://www.eagames.com/redesign/games/pccd/bf2/home.jsp

And how will the server stats work? Does this mean that every single time I play the game, it will keep track of what I'm doing? Does this affect the game as a whole, or just on the individual server you're playing on? It would be quite disappointing to join a server on night, play around with some friends just goofing off. Then join a server to play a match only to realize that my character is underpowered due to messing around on a server and bringing my stats down. How will the servers track? (pb#, logged in id#, etc.)

#7 synthetic, i read a preview in swedish pcgamer in the summer, and they said that u should be alble to take cover when ure playing gunner in a tank...
nice intreview btw
"d.NewmaN" | #47 | 2004-11-26 16:52 (5.8 years ago)
How do the tanks shoot? With an arc like in vanilla BF1942 or DC-like?

Still possible to get shot while in cover? BF1942 great netcode style? :D

Nice preview.
"Deicide" | #48 | 2004-11-26 16:56 (5.8 years ago)
Hmmm cool, but why there no fps view in the video ?

It's possible to use ironsights on weapons as in Joint Ops ?
"Windex" | #49 | 2004-11-26 17:37 (5.8 years ago)
Excellent review very nice of DICE to allow you guys a sneak peak, however NB has done alot of things for BF. Im interested in the 100 person + thing also, appears they may have had to scale it back, but 64 players is plenty.

Question: I have not heard mention of an anti cheat system ie: Punkbuster or something better, have they spoke about that? I am confident they will impliment anti cheat measures it would be tragic to see a great game get ruined.
rascal | Sweden | #50 | 2004-11-26 18:01 (5.8 years ago)
#49, there will be an anti cheating system in there. And since your game key is linked to your gaming profile I reckon it´s gonna hurt to be caught.

#plenty.
All those who asked about what specs the machines had: I can´t tell for sure, but we were playing on some fast IBM machines. Possible multi proc, maybe not.
It doesn't matter much tho, since DICE hasn't started the optimization process yet, so who knows where they will end up specs wise.

Man, I can't get the new theme-music out of my head! And I don't mind!
*Puts up the smile of a six-year-old on christmas eve*

A few questions though:
How is infantry balanced against hardware? Are we hardcore grunts, footsoldiers and rouge snipers obsolete, or will the regular G.I.Joe be as important as in vanilla bf?
How are the classes balanced against each other? I'm a bolt action rifle junkie myself, will I enjoy bf2? Are there great differences between the classes when it comes to close (/medium /far away) combat?
"Pazuzu" | #59 | 2004-11-26 19:11 (5.8 years ago)

I can't download the videos yet (at work) to answer my own question...is there blood in the game??? What about all those other good questions in #45? I am very interested in the stats system. It's gonna suck big time if it constantly keeps track of what you're always doing....no goofing off cause it'll kill your stats...

yay!!!!!11 i already ordered the game, on release day i find it in my post box \o/
"JDsBruceLee" | #63 | 2004-11-26 20:26 (5.8 years ago)
What about the clans and people who like to play CTF. I'm hearing no CTF at release. They never made a CTF patch for BFV, so what makes us think they will for this game.
Neojslayer | #64 | 2004-11-26 20:33 (5.8 years ago)
Like someone already said, with all the modding tools they are releasing with the game it will not be hard at all for someone to mod it and make CTF
"Disc" | #65 | 2004-11-26 21:03 (5.8 years ago)
Nice review guys... only one mistake (quite a huge one), you seem to believe bf2 will be the first ones with the commander-system...
NS (a mod for HL) has had the commander system (and a popup-menu VERY similar to that of bf2) since its beginning, which was about 2-3 years ago
TwiTcH | United States of America | #66 | 2004-11-26 21:21 (5.8 years ago)
i still dont see where it was mentioned this was the first use of it....all i see is talking about it.

and just so you know..... NS was NOT the first one to use that type of system either.
rascal | Sweden | #67 | 2004-11-26 22:03 (5.8 years ago)
Thanks Twitch because I never said that. I believe a commander function is in Join Operations for example.
But I will say that the commander function will probaly be a small scale revolution in the Battlefield universe at least. Cheers :)
"malakai" | #68 | 2004-11-26 22:40 (5.8 years ago)
How is the tanking in BF2? Is it like in BF1942 where each tank takes a considerable amount of skill + experience, or is it noobish like in DC/DC Final where the accuracy is practically 100% and anyone, even grandma, can hit a tree 30 miles away?

As a tanker, I'm concerned about this because I feel that in DC, tanking doesn't take much skill. In BF1942, the way the armor is and the aim for each tank almost every single one takes a whole different approach to command it properly.

Its funny that I see whine-baggers on the TWL DC Final forums complaining about tanking in DC like it is hard.
MuNcH | United States of America | #69 | 2004-11-26 23:16 (5.8 years ago)
Tanking in DC and BF2 should be easy compared to BF42. You're talking about 50+ years of technological advances to the equipment the soldiers are using. Take driving a sherman, estimating the distance to target, calculate shell drop for the angle of attack and compare it to the computer in an Abrams that does it for you.

"Demize99" | #74 | 2004-11-27 00:35 (5.8 years ago)
Its a pity you can't tell anything about netcode from a LAN game, good to see they fixed up the physics, especially the infantry.

I hear the poor guys @ DICE are already working 6 day weeks, and the games out due out for 4 months. I'd hate to see their "crunch" time.

#73 - Felt like El Alamein size, but somewhat hard to say.

I was curious if there is a lean function while in combat or is the groundplay not that tactical? I am a huge Americas Army Fan and realize the groundplay can not be as tactical due to all of the other elements in the game but it would be nice to be able to lean.

I can't wait for the relase or demo at least

Thanks

You mentioned no multi-monitor support, but what about widescreen support?

Did they mention that? Were any of the screens there wide LCDs (16:9 or 16:10)?

BF 1942 doesn't really support widescreen (it just stretches the image). Apparently, because they consider the few extra degrees of FOV to be cheating, but if CS has no problem with it, I don't really see why it's an issue.

Many more people will have wide screens by the time this is out (I'm getting mine in two days), and it seems silly to force us to play with a distorted image or black bars on the sides.

Hi all, I read the nice review that you put guys but I haven't seen the videos yet...(working on a Mac on 56k this weekend...:))
I have a few comments and a few questions if you don't mind me...

First of all, I would like to say that the more players you see a game advertising the less quality is transfered through network. No matter what companies advertise about their network of being smooth as a baby's bum even for 56k...is b****. Why is that? Because with the technology and networks that we have at the moment...can't have everything...if you hear lots of players..there is a catch...let's take for example JO that I've been playing it since demo came out...100-150 players...is cool..but there is no teamwork in public servers...and more important...there is so much screen lag...that game is impossible to be played in 10-12fps...Escalation is even worse..as even with the highest end pc...you still have to chop the quality...wait for the best thought...for those of you that have played JO..take a note of the rounds per minute of a gun...maximum is 550rpm where in real life..is 750-1000 depending of the weapon...personally when i fire an M60 on a simulator..need to have a feel of it (like AA)..not that i'm shooting a waterpistol...
Bottomline...i wouldn't worry about 64max players..not even 32...cause that means quality gameplay....which is fun...
A few questions now on the things that you have seen, regarding realism. A game of that scale won't go for all out realism...but i was interesting in the following things...:
1. You said that player movement feels more like CS or Quake 3. Does this mean the animation or the speed itself? One thing that contributes to arcade gameplay is player speed...and CS feels like ur in motorised rollers...:) Do you have a walk mode, running and sprint...? and in sprint can you shoot...or is the accuracy affected?
2. Snipers: How the scope has been implemented? fixed magnification or variable?
3. Recoil: Did u notice if the recoil is like DC, which pulls the gun upwards and right..?
4. last thing, not to do with realism. On the ranking servers...any word if they are going to be official only? like AA? or any server will be able to be linked? I hate the thought of me having to play so many hours in an official server, in order to pump up my stats to get so many weapons or this hight position in the ranking system...before I go on my server..that I pay a significant ammount every month...to hire it....

Thanks

Cheers Nbrigade, excellent read. Just wondered if you lot feel that this game will be as popular (if not more) as b1942 once was. Bf Vietnam dissapointed me and i hope this is not the same. Do you belive it will be a game we will be playing for years or will its appeal just wear of in a matter of days?

You guys did a great job, and I'm jealous as hell. But I think the real question still hasn't been asked/answered yet.... How did you luck bastards get the invite for this? And why didn't they pick a better clan like mine, to do the testing/preview? ;)

Quote from MuNcH Post #69
"Tanking in DC and BF2 should be easy compared to BF42. You're talking about 50+ years of technological advances to the equipment the soldiers are using. Take driving a sherman, estimating the distance to target, calculate shell drop for the angle of attack and compare it to the computer in an Abrams that does it for you."

The range of the tank guns in BF1942 is utterlu unrealistic, in World War 2 tank guns had a range of at least 500 m, so the trajectory would have been much flatter (ie more like Desert Combat).

"Tomcat" | #105 | 2004-11-27 21:14 (5.8 years ago)
BF2 engine is developed in house in DICE and has been already bought from Saab if i'm not mistaken...or Swedish airforce...one of the two...:)

Some more (unfortunate) info on the Linux server question gleaned from the server admin mailing list (thanks to Andreas Fredriksson who is the man and all his hard work is appreciated more than we can express):

Date: Fri, 26 Nov 2004 23:16:20 +0100
From: Andreas Fredriksson

Sean Decker (BF2's producer) explicitly said it was OK to share this
information with you, so I am. He is the one calling the shots on
large-scale planning in the project.

I'm sad to say that my managers have assigned me to other areas over the
course of this project and I will most likely not get the time I would
need to bring you a high quality Linux server at ship time.

I really wanted to make this product launch with excellent Linux support
from the start, but it's not my call.

// Andreas

Express your concern (as am I) to Sean, the lead Producer, and all the other managers who have apparently decided a linux server is not a critical component of the game's initial success.
"CE_Digger" | #107 | 2004-11-27 23:37 (5.8 years ago)
Thanks for the preview NB! Can't wait to play some BF2!

(g8, I would imagine that moving Andreas from Linux support to work on other things is not a statement that Dice doesn't want Linux servers, but a resource issue that something else is more important at the moment--and I really doubt emailing anyone is going to help. I may be wrong though.)
g8 | United States of America | #108 | 2004-11-28 00:13 (5.8 years ago)
Digger our digger oh where have you been! Very good to see you :)

Yeah Diggs, that is a valid point however based on the discussion on the mailing list it seems that they are not really concerned with a linux server (which many of us who provide the gameplay infrastructure, especially commercial gameserver providers, feel is extremely important for the success of the game).

Anyway, letting them know our opinion does help (imo) in that it lets them know where the concerns of the admin community lie. And i'm not necessarily saying email them; but post here, in other forums, on the admins mailing list, etc, our feelings about the person who was 'the man' with getting us a linux server for bf1942 being taken off the task. We will sorely miss Andreas especially since he has been one of the best official sources providing feedback and communication to the community as well.
"Saint" | #109 | 2004-11-28 01:01 (5.8 years ago)
Still dont know how the helis fly, I hope its more like the DC ones because after mastering that you have to forget everything to learn how to fly them in BF:V
"CE_Digger" | #110 | 2004-11-28 01:27 (5.8 years ago)
g8 said, "We will sorely miss Andreas especially since he has been one of the best official sources providing feedback and communication to the community as well."

Whoa! I thought they just reassigned him to a different task. I didn't know they murdered the poor guy. Of course maybe that's what 'reassigned' means in Sweden. I'm on your side now, let's stick it to the man.

If a bunch of whining Brits can get the Spitfire in BF42, then a few of us can surely whine up a Linux server. Let it begin!
g8 | United States of America | #111 | 2004-11-28 03:10 (5.8 years ago)
/me pours another glass of '04 whine ;), It's not all bad, I just feel for Andreas who wanted a great linux server along with the rest of us (admins).

On a lighter note, holy schnikeys! I just watched KOiN's new bf2 video for the first time, man i'm pumped up now! I love the remix of the theme, it's really great. And I have to watch the video about 30 more times in slowmo to digest at each cut. I think i'll need some wetnaps for the larger video. Awesome work KOiN, muchas grassyass for giving us such a tasty treat. Thanksgiving indeed.

not what i expected TBH, alot less "NEW" ideas and more of the same "OLD" ideas with a new way to do it that apparently works better ie interface pressing Q to bring up comms not Function keys, and the Commander part really just seems to be a lamented attempt at bringing in a different genre of player into FPS style game! (Note: new players new attitudes beware!)

As for me being a bit cynical not at all, rather im being brutally honest as i loved "Desert Combat/BF'42" and found many a days that after 10 hrs id peel myself away form the game so i can say now im a "Honest Fan" not a cynical twot :)

I spose game companys will protect themself and say lets stay with a "Selling/winning" forumal as "NEW" ideas can bring untold happenings and well in todays Mass marketing its pays to be in the norm!

Great work to everyone on the review and at EA for realising that the "Community" could do with a insight and EA get some outside feedback - hmm but wouldnt a public BETA or such help alot more? oh well thatd be like saying wiouldnt have it been better to support the modding community rather than compete on fornt with it!

Peace love and mungbeans baby!

LOL at everyone thinking the DC heli controls are for "experienced" players, the controls way back in the early betas (0.2/0.3) were much better, it kept most keyboard/mouse pilots out of the sky and it really meant something to be able to lay down 'death from above'

Is there a reason that you aren't answering some of the questions here? Are there certain details that EA/DICE don't want you to talk about?

For example you mention that someone spent allot of time flying the helicopters but you don't say what the controls are like.
KOiN | Sweden | #137 | 2004-11-29 15:42 (5.8 years ago)
Personally i dont have time to, dunno about the others tho.
rascal | Sweden | #138 | 2004-11-29 16:05 (5.8 years ago)
Ill try :)

The Chopper controls were not that good in the current version. In the build we played they turned like bricks. But they told us the controls will be changed to a quicker, more responsive feel, but they won´t go the DC way where you can spin around your own axis in 1/10 of a second. Modern day choppers are big and heavy bastards.

Hmm apart from a few nice features sounds like 97% of that is all in Joint Ops already!

All those little comments like a great solution if you are hidden in grass you won't be seem from a distance.. in JO already etc.

I am sure it will be a stonking game, but Joint Ops is already there and with 150 players :) (and the new add-on Escalations is hell fun with the bikes and M1 tanks :))

So I hope it ADDS a lot more to the genre - still I am sure we will all end up buying it anyway ;)
"Radioactive" | #144 | 2004-11-29 18:20 (5.8 years ago)
Thx to you guys for the great review (nice vids KOiN, as always) and to DICE that for allowing you to publish all this :)

The only thing i am really sad about is that there won't be any ctf support from the start.

I am part of a community only playing ctf as we found conquest to become boring quickly for us (its just a better deathmatch after all).

Oh well i hope they might enhance the "objective" game mode from dc probably so there might be something that holds the fun untill the modders take care of it :)
ego | United States of America | #145 | 2004-11-29 18:24 (5.8 years ago)
Personally, I'm REALLY suprised that the community hasn't made a BFV CTF mod yet... but as with 1942, anything thats missing can be added in a mod. And with the release of the mod tools, it should be even easier!

about that wide screen...
on Warsaw Game Show - where this gamedemo -recorded was shown on a wide screen LCD
and.. i thinkthat units were not just shorter - all vehicules were propper size (i think so...)

and ppl dont ask about game play.. game handling... because it can chandge on a day basis... even couple times a day...
what i am curious is remote server manager... will it by this crappy big-o-resource eatter that was shippedwith BFV or BBO one?*
*(best there is)

next is the map scale... would i be able to set a 16 player server with 64 player scale?
and the demo - will there be a way to restrict demos to a player field of view? - im talking about exposing tactics...
NB please tell this to someone "important" pls!! :)

#141 "Im curious about the overall skill level bf2 has compared to bf."

When I first played BF1 I thought it was hard to get into with all the vehicles etc. BF-V was a smoother transition since it was just more of the same.
But with BF2 I felt that again, like in BF1, there´s so much new to learn, vehicles, weapons, chaff, commander, squads etc.
So I think the learning curve will be somewhat steeper than say BfV.
About skills in terms of hitting stuff: It felt like the deviation/spread of the guns is something you _really_ have to pay attention to, depending on gun type, and the position of the player. Of course, this is nothing new, many games have that, but I felt it even more in the current build of BF2. "A minute to learn, a life time to master" ;)

Is it just me, or for everytime we answer a question there´s ten new ones :)

Maybe we need to go back to DICE for another Q&A...
"Victoriouse" | #154 | 2004-11-29 21:35 (5.8 years ago)
K,again the same question.

1)On what comps u played ?
2)Why is there no FPP view ? Dice didn't want to show it or what ?

Thx.
dB(A) | Netherlands | #155 | 2004-11-29 21:42 (5.8 years ago)
Heya Victoriouse, I see you are really concerned about the computer specs. Unfortunately, it looks like the guys that were at the DICE office can't really help you with regards to the specs of the computers they played on or the specs that they're aiming for. I did read somewhere though, that DICE is aiming for pretty much the same specs as BF-V or a little higher. If you can run BF-V very well, you shouldn't have a problem with BF2 either.

From post #50:
All those who asked about what specs the machines had: I can´t tell for sure, but we were playing on some fast IBM machines. Possible multi proc, maybe not.
It doesn't matter much tho, since DICE hasn't started the optimization process yet, so who knows where they will end up specs wise.

Don't underestimate the optimisation process. It can really improve the overall performance of an engine.

Concerning your second question: I believe the footage you saw was captured with the demo recording option in BF2 (muahahahaha!), which was later on recorded to an avi. So it's quite obvious that the FPS counter isn't being displayed. Besides that, it's ugly in a movie as well.
"slijkhuis" | #156 | 2004-11-30 00:10 (5.8 years ago)
i have opened this page sevral times now... and can't get enough... #23 orsomething asked for PC Spec. can you guys do a gues of what it will need if you look at it? did you all play it on Max. dB(A) | Netherlands | #157 | 2004-11-30 00:16 (5.8 years ago)
Considering the fact that our guys played the pre-alpha version, it is very hard to tell what the final specs will be... for the developers as well. But as I've written @ #155, they're aiming for specs a little above the BF-V requirements.

System Specs For BF2 Will Be Similiar To BF42's But A Bit Higher.

700mh or Higher Processor.
512kb cache would be recommended or higher.
512MB PC 100 or PC133 or DDR266 & Higher Ram.

64MB Video Card That Has Transform & Lighting & Supports DX 9.0 & .NET Framework Perferably.
Any higher GPU that has T & L will be better. 128/256 - 8xAgp GeForce 4 thru 6.
Ati Rad's with best QL drivers.

You will still be able to run it on 256mb ram & Any T&L Card & Any 500mh processor that has 512kb cache. Nice and smoothly on a 16 player max server.

But, recommended settings would be 700mh and higher.
256kb cache will be ok if you have 1 gig DDR or Fast Page PC100\133 SDRAM. Np :)

Hope this helps clear up some questions about specs which won't be released for another month or 2 for sure. Happy Modding & Gaming! ProgrammerSySoPo@Yahoo.com

Hello again, Another Answer To A Great Question.

Online Demo!!!!

YES! Multiplayer Demo Will Be Released in The Near Future Perhaps 1-2 Weeks Prior To Release. But Perhaps Once The Game Is Released Or Only 2 Days Prior. 48 Hours Is The New Rule With Some Companies & I'm Not Sure 100% If They Obide By Any Rules .HeHe.

So i guess keep your eyes peeled & plenty caffine on hand.
If your playing the waiting game.

Good Luck, SySoPo.

Ahh P.S.S last one lol!

I Hope The Helo's Controll's Get Better.

Someone needs to make correct decisions around there.
Listen to the DC Fans & Just Give Them On The Fly Control. lol.
Atleast Leave It Still Possible With .con's. Is All I Ask.

It's not really a huge dramatic issue.
Compared to the HUD & Menu & Voice.

It's something that can be game patched or map\mod sided ;
After release date & everyones first opinions..

"""I think the helo's should have an engine on a Rotational bundle point that is .5 or more away from center zero Axis of helo hull. Including it's other 3 lifter engines , 1 on nose, 2 in back (like a 3 wheeler). If there were engines off centered or like a Counter Weight .5+ in Center, Counter Weighing Its Axis On Opposite Swivel Point. It will Cause Some Bad A$$ Flying Manuever's "Very Realistic."

I hope that's how it ends up.

The copter controls should be adjusted to take into account the balancing issues of all the new vehicles and weapons of bf2, aswell as based on some sense of realism in the context of modern equpment. They should not be kept the same as in previous titles just to make fanboys happy from DC or BFV.

blackhawk, i think i saw about 8 spots for people, not sure, i actually dont even know if that was a blackhawk.

feeling of chopters, untweaked, not even worth talking about until they are properly tweaked.

missiles, do i recall a laserpointed missiles? I know i saw heatseeking missiles. kool thing with these are that if you fly close to other heatgiving object such as chimneys and such they might start tracking those instead of you.
"rightnow" | #186 | 2004-12-02 12:31 (5.8 years ago)
I really hope flying chopters will be easier with Joystick than mouse. Not like in BFV. Cause if its easier with mouse you kinda loose the whole feeling.

How many rockets did it take for the anti-tank infantry class to take out a tank? Or is it like 1 shot to rear of tank where armour is weakest, 2 shots to the side ect..
"iO.Mangimaru" | #188 | 2004-12-02 13:33 (5.8 years ago)
Two more things. In one of the bf2 trailers I saw civilian car window be shot through by small arms fire {m4 carbine I think but whatever} Is it possible to shoot through the glass on cockpits of aircraft with small arms? Second part of question. We all know that you can shoot through certain materials ingame. Is it possible for certain infantry weapons such as heavy mgs to penetrate aircraft through the actual chassis {metal bit, as opposed to the glass cockpit] and shoot the people inside? Rather than only being able to shoot them from the open side doors.

#189, I did read that DICE is working on making it possible for passengers to shoot from vehicles (Shoot from windows with own weapon). However, I do beleive you have to be mounted "E" to the vehicle. I don't know if that is what you are asking, in a round about way.

That's what I heard as well. As a passenger, when you're aboard (so you've used E), you should be able to shoot from the vehicle. To be honest, it shouldn't be that hard. They've done it before (Codename: Eagle rocks when you're playing CTF, you managed to get the flag and you can still shoot people from the motorbike.)

I believe that movie isn't the latest one out there :P In fact I believe the ones on NBrigade.com are :P

they say : play up to 64 players !!!! well soldier boy, do you have EVER played a 64 server in bf42 and bfv ??? yes , but with one hell of a lag :(

man i though they gonna make maps for 100+ players with a ping of 20 MS

and the map preview = i think the maps sucks, its to open , no jungle only desert and miles of grass, and no real sea battle just like in Midway

Dice if you read this :::: tnkx 2 scr*w up bf
when Joint operations comes i though : dice is gone make bf2 much better then Joint, well... i am wrong now

Couple of quick questions for you guys,

1)Do you know if there going to make rappel lines for the helos ??...so soldiers can zip down them.

2) Do you thinking leaning from side to side (left or right around corners) would be cool?

3) Is there a walk and or run key?... When you run and go prone does the soldier jump?

4)Do you feel this game will have more realism then arcade this time around?

@ 209:
I don't see the point of playing with 64 players on maps that cannot hold 64 players. The biggest map in BF1942 is obviously El Alamein, but there are far too few vehicles etc. to keep it interesting for 64 players.

I'm downloading a Joint Operations demo now to see what all the fuss is about (what did I miss last time I played it), but I'm afraid that BF2 will rock Joint Operations in every way. Don't forget that BF1942 was 2 years ago, which is quite a long period in the gaming scene.

but dBa .. so you say that you can play in a 64 server without lag ?

if thats right , is 64 oke with me , but if you play joint operations in a server with 100 players there is absolutly no lag at all ( and the joint demo sucks, because many bugs and less vechicals ) so why isnt dice making 100+ ?? maybe because they wanna go home and celebrating Sinter klaas and New year so they put a part of the old engine in the new engine :S ??

bf42 rockes, bfv sucks , bf2 ownes ??

but why bf42 rockes : the freedom soldier, the freedom, the huge levels, all those anti air things, many boats in 1 level, making assualts on the d-day beach etc.

why bfv sucks, small levels... , the bf feeling was away , less levels etc.

and bf2 ??..... god knows...
dB(A) | Netherlands | #219 | 2004-12-04 19:34 (5.8 years ago)
Yes, I can play in a 64 server player without lag, but that has other reasons ;)

To be honest, I don't think that bigger equals better. I like a relatively small server much better than a big one, just because I'd like to recognise certain people by their style of play. The longer I stay in the server, the more I get used to everybody's style of play: therefore I can anticipate on how they will act. Some people are just plain stupid, while others are far more sneaky and clever. I don't think I will ever get to know all the players in a 128 player server.

I agree with you that BFV is not the cool game that BF1942 is, but that doesn't say that BF2 will look anything like BFV. On the contrary I would say, as the original team for BF1942 in Sweden is creating BF2. BFV (which still has some of the issues that the original had way back) was created by DICE Canada, as I recall.

I can't say whether BF2 will rock or not, since I haven't played one bit of it yet. It's just sit back and wait for things to come. And then we'll see whether 128 player servers made it in or not...
"Only64players :(" | #220 | 2004-12-04 20:37 (5.8 years ago)

@ #222

agree.... really strange... EA took that to their site and now they put 64... think that the multiplayer engine will be supported by EA and they know it can only carry 64... but DICE didn't update their site, but on the other hand. DICE should know it better cuz they are developing it.... we will wait and see....

@ all

BF1942 was cool but began to bore me soon enough... with much players there was not much to do... and Battlefield Vietnam... well... sucked... i really hate jungle warfare... cant see a shyt, and it aint good... just bought MoH Pacific Assault... yuk... bad buy... but BF2 is more my style... and especially cuz of the Modern Weapons... speaking of "Modern" wonder how "Battlefield: Modern Combat" will look like... did you guys from Northern Brigade get a chance to see something from that... just bought a Ps2 (small version) and i want to try that out too! :)

On the BF2 page of Dice Sweden's website, it says "Voicechat supported with USB headset" which I take to mean you will have to have a USB headset to use the Voicecom function (as opposed to the standard headphones that plug into 3.5mm sockets on your soundcard) you didn't go into much detail about the Voicecom, but could you confirm whether or not the headsets you were using were USB or not?

@ dB (A )

i have send a email to the BF2 dev. gys team

( wich you can do 2 : info@dice.se )

this was my email ( i gotted 1 reaction yesterday : Your feedback as send further to the BF2 team

Email :
Hi

i am realy mad what you guys are doing , so i give you a tip for you for making bf2

( and i am speaking for over 100 battlefield clans )

before ignore this email ,,,, read this first plz

first of all about the Battlefield series ,

bf42 was real good , the real online teamplay war feeling :)

then comes bfv......... very small levels , many bugs include the grass, the napalm etc.

then came Joint operations, many bf players switched to Joint because the 150+ servers with just 20 MS and not much lag, huge levels, under water swimming , realistic choppers ( so you can walk in with 20 + people with out pressing E ) and long take off time and realistic Iron - aiming side on any weapon etc.

so all the bfv / bf players thought : wow , joint ops. is better then all the bf games, but wait bf2 is coming , its gonna be better then joint ops. IF there is 100+ servers, huge levels, realstic choppers ( just like Joint ops ) etc.

so we waited .... then came a Impressions about BF2 , its was realy cool , nice graphics and 100+ servers and VOIP and squad/ commander option... Yeah , we were very happy about this

but some weeks later .... we saw a PReview about bf2 and in the preview : Online multiplayer up to 64+ ( ???? ) , and a few days later came there a Map preview : we saw no big forrest but just much desert and open grass fields :(

You guys know that bfv was not a succes, but you are thinking that bf2 will change that ??? if you create 64 player servers ? and with black hawks where you have to puch E to get with just 5 people on board ?? and with no big sea boats just like in bfv ??? etc.

battlefield 1942 was a SUCCES , Joint operations is a BIG succes, so make BF2 a MAJOR SUCCES

so whats the tip ???

1 ) : Listen to the gamers and not to the money

2) : Look and Play joint operations and learn from it !!

3) : Make the 100 + back again , i know that there are some issues but you can fix it right , dont you ?

and you say 100 times : Realistic gameplay is not what we wanted , we want a fun game etc.

but guys : Realistic = Fun !! , you remember.... battlefield 1942 was a big succes because it was Realistic ( for the games in 2002 )

now you can do 2 things

1 : ignore this email and finish bf2 , and i and 1000+ bf players will see you at the Joint operations jungle / field

2 : thing about this email , and talk about it with other people

this was a message from many people , thank you for reading this

Regards,

Many battlefield clans

@ #235: Since you're obviously directing your post to me, I will have to answer I'm afraid ;)

I read your mail and allthough I understand your feelings, I do not entirely agree with how you've written your mail. And I'm afraid the response you got, 'Your feedback as send further to the BF2 team', means that 'your request will be further processed in /dev/null'. (Go figure out what that means :P)

To be honest, I would be glad if all mails sent by gamers wouldn't be honored as they are sometimes holding back progression in games. When BF was still on the drawing boards, the CE & BF community (me included) wanted BF to be a direct successor to their holy game, Codename Eagle. But as the development process progressed, it became clear that BF would stray from the path where CE had come from. I can recall literally hundreds of postings on how BF should stick to it's predecessor, but in the end, I'm glad the developers decided to trust their own judgement. I'm afraid the game wouldn't have sold as well as it did now if they would've decided to listen to 'us', the CE & BF community, at that time.

However, during the first few months after the release of the game, it would've perhaps been more wise to address some of the issues that were asked for by the community (most of these were finally seen to in the 1.6 release). It's the same with some of the new features that currently lack in the original BF2 (at least, as far as I read).

The most important one of these is probably BFTV, which could really boost the BF sales if BF2 would be added to the big leagues (remember last year, where BF was substituted for UT on the Cyberathlete Pro League?). BF is just not suited for showing it to big audiences, like HLTV has.

Linux servers at the start of the release would help a great deal as well. Just look at the sheer amount of Linux servers in BF: (1942/V) nowadays compared to Windows. That should give somebody a clue... :P

Returning to the subject at hand, I have confidence that the DICE team will release a game that still has the old BF feel, yet takes the game into the next phase. And for me, the next phase is not just about bigger servers, as I have explained myself before.

You wrote:
so all the bfv / bf players thought : wow , joint ops. is better then all the bf games, but wait bf2 is coming , its gonna be better then joint ops. IF there is 100+ servers, huge levels, realstic choppers ( just like Joint ops ) etc.

First of all: not all BF/BFV players thought, as I currently see that there are still 5415 gamers playing Battlefield 1942 and 2434 gamers playing Battlefield: Vietnam (www.gamespy.com/stats) (not counting the 210 players playing the BF demo) ;)

so we waited .... then came a Impressions about BF2 , its was realy cool , nice graphics and 100+ servers and VOIP and squad/ commander option... Yeah , we were very happy about this

but some weeks later .... we saw a PReview about bf2 and in the preview : Online multiplayer up to 64+ ( ???? ) , and a few days later came there a Map preview : we saw no big forrest but just much desert and open grass fields :(

Second: I don't recall they ever said that they would be releasing a game featuring big forrests etc... all I ever saw prior to the "wastelands video" was the "city video" and the "dam video". And what I had otherwise heard, all indicated that it would be a game close to the Desert Combat mod, which it turns out to be. I'm quite happy with what I saw so far.

I don't think that your e-mail will achieve anything and to be honest, I hope it will not. It would be mightily stupid to change a course taken in the last few months prior to a release. Just let these guys do their job, which is creating a game that is something new, not just 'another Joint Operations'. You might enjoy the new style, as did I with BF1942.

I hope you will login to this forum in 6 months and have a great laugh at your post ;)

There are quite a few other things I would have loved to put here, but I'm afraid I will kill the thread by such a long read ;)

Cheers for the reply, I'm well aware of what it says on the EA website, but slightly puzzled by what it says on the BF2 page of Dice's website ("Voicechat supported with USB headset") could someone that actually played the preview of the game please confirm for me whether or not you used USB headsets?

Thanks for the reply, just one other question: from what you saw, do you think there is potential for helicopter base r**ing in the game or will it be a lot harder?
"@dam" | #243 | 2004-12-07 01:35 (5.8 years ago)
It always annoys me that the enemy has keys to my teams vehicles! I hope in BF2, the enemy won't have keys all the time since it ruins the balance. "Hey look, a guy flew a Mig17 over to our base and parachuted into our attack huey. Hey look, now hes killing us with it. Oh look hes out of ammo, thank goodness. Oh wait, he just parachuted into the second huey! "WHO LEFT THE KEYS IN THE DAMN HUEY AGAIN?!" Very annoying.

Anyone know if the ranking system thing will make it even harder on the noobs that don't play hours everyday? That is, will super geeks get even better weapons to kick butt with?

I know if 100+ players would be chosen It would LAG like HELL
see for your selfe in BFV 40 players is already unplayeble
with all these debris and crap
SInce BF2 will have more of that stuff flying around + volumetric shadows casting every where think again

I think it will be like CS that your rank commes from scratch in the beginning (corect me if Im wrong)
but you commit that you are a noob? (otherwise you wouldnt be complaining)

about the keys I think it would be good that vehicles couldnt be stolen from their spawn point but if they moved they can
"-[SoD]-Orion" | #247 | 2004-12-07 16:10 (5.8 years ago)
First of all: Many thx for the gorgeous footage and article @ NB´s !

Second: Thx to DICE for letting u take a sneak peek at it!

Third: Thx for post #234. It was about time to get that straight! And I personally think JO is complete crap, it just doesn´t FEEL right to me, but thats just a matter of taste.

I´m definately not going to ask u this and that over and over again. Gameplay/Features will definately change a lot until release.
What i think is: We all (BF42+ especially DCvets) are pretty much in sorrow wether they´ll do it just RIGHT.

Well folks, here´s the good news:
-it´s not done by DICE Canada... thank god (Did u ever compare BFV to EoD? Thx to Goetterfunke et al for hours and hours of great vietnam action and a couple of the best models in the BF/Mod universe!)
-they will release modding tools/editor etc. immediately on release so we can make ourselfs a bunch of happy kids in an instant.
-they DO listen to the community, so i´m pretty confident they will think twice about really important matters like Linux server, Live broadcasting etc..
-what i´ve seen so far gives me the impression that Dice learns from their mistakes concerning how to handle a release, how to treat the community (not that they treat us bad...), the importance of being played in leagues and so on.
-if u judge the game by what u see, one have to admit that it´s on a good way to make us (BF/DCvets) happy. U wanna play JO/AA/UT? Fine with me, do so. As long as i dont have to...

Just my 2 cents

P.S. Of course i do hope for my own personal set of features like:
-No chutes for choppers
-animated ejection seats for jetpilots (and to avoid planetaxiing, give Pilots a Mp5/Scorpion and a strobo for evac. :-P)
-vehicle enter/exit animations (doors/hatches)
-stealing vehicles from the opposing team should be limited to jeeps/trucks etc. and definately exclude APCs/tanks/choppers/jets (see #243!) Not for the sake of realism but for the benefit of gameplay!
-swimming/diving for "light" classes (spec ops)
-vehicles should have a damage system for different parts, not only front/rear/side...
-choppers should "spin" out of the sky when loosing the tail rotor (that was done pretty neat in EoD)
-crash landings and the abillity to survive those when done properly should result from that
(the damage inflicted by the ground impact shouldn´t make the aircraft explode and get anybody killed, but give the player a fall/drop damage.)
-...

Thx for ur time, feel free to comment/flame.

HELL, I JUST CAN´T WAIT FOR RELEASE................

Oh, I forgot about that one:
We need more vehicles!!! For me, one thing that made DC so special was the great diversity in types/versions/weapon loadouts. It meant, u had to learn the pros and cons of all these units to use them full scale.
Think alone of the number of different types of littlebirds and gazelles in DC.
Or HumVees/BRDMs, just cool.
30 vehicles for 3 parties doesn´t sound much to me...
"GnouDesOibs" | #250 | 2004-12-07 17:55 (5.8 years ago)
You're all talking about such interesting aspects of the game but one has been forgotten : the sound quality (weapon, vehicules, ...).

I've heard in a previous interview (i don't have the link) that dice is working hard on this aspect of the game.

Can you give us you impressions ?

1-Will be there ropes to go down from choppers?

2-Everybody have parachutes? Like other bf games or only the pilots will have?

I hope me PC is able to handle this game....Its survived Joint Ops so I think it can make it through BF 2 I hope...

I wanna like fill a Jeep with tons of C4 and drive it straight into a enemy base liek full of guys and like jump off at the last second and detonate it then maybe if I survive I will go at em all! with carbine, then pistol, then knife! NO FEAR!!!! hoooah
Tomato | United States of America | #256 | 2004-12-08 06:43 (5.8 years ago)
In BFV, I did this really dareing thing, I landed a huey right next to a ammo box adn started loading C4 after C4 into the chopper, I then went patroling along the Khe Sahn border and the NVA had like a huge line of infantry and armour heading to our base, I don't know why they stayed so close together especially in MP games....but anyway I dove straight for em jumped out and right as the huey was about to crash I detonated it and the noise almost took out my speakers, The explosian wiped out a huge amount of them it took out like 1 tank and one ZSU AA gun, and liek 20 infantry. the impact was really strong it killed me adn I was flaoting above the explosion! So I liek explosians and I think that BF 2 will make good explosians according to the destructable bridges adn such. I could take out chunks of enemy! and get more rank....I hope...

Well i'm off.

"@dam" | #259 | 2004-12-08 11:48 (5.8 years ago)
The suggestion in regards to not allowing the enemy to steal main vehicles that have not moved from spawns is the best suggestion so far. I hope they implement it or something better.

Also, chopper pilots should not get a parachutes. Chopper passengers should not get parachutes. The only people that should get them are plane pilots and passengers of a C130 like plane where people run out of the back of.

Allowing people to totally eliminate the text messages and audio for themselves should be done. The least text I can get is a single line, but even that is annoying. And then when radio audio is disabled, the announcer still yells in my hear when flags are taken, under attack, etc (in BF:V). That drives me crazy.. I DONT GIVE A CRAP IF SOME FLAG ACROSS THE MAP WAS TAKEN! I HAVE THE MAP IN FULL MODE WITH 100% TRANSPARENCY FFS! I CAN SEEEEEEEEEEEEEE IT! lol.

And anti-lag so that I dont have to aim in the middle of nowhere to hit damage vehicles. You know, when you aim where the enemy will be about 5 seconds later, and then you see your missle fly off into the distance but apparently it killed the helicopter that is 100m away from it, lol. If I hit them on my screen, IT SHOULD REGISTER A HIT. Put in anti-lag network code like other games have, please.

The option for pilots to forcibly remove co-pilots from the aircraft. Just make another button that you can press to remove them. Some people will jump in when you are trying to pick up a friend and wont leave or will just shoot the ammo off for no reason. It would be AMAZING to remove them from the aircraft and then have a SLAAAAAP sound made. lol.

Am having a case of insomina. lol.

for the chopper noobs it would be yes

a real pilot can hover it by hand

he chopper controls in bfv are so easy as riding a bike

about choppers I think it would be more then fair that you should only able to fly air vehicles if you are a PILOT CLASS with only a hand gun

Hey guys: I'm an experienced heli pilot in BF DC and BFV and I'm really curious how they've changed the flight model in BF2 . have they dumbed it down even more so than BFV; or is it still challenging? Much of the fun of flying in DC is that you're in a very elite few who have mastered the vehicle. I hope they don't take that away in bf2 .

Question for the people that played the game:

Could you tell me a bit more about the defibrillator (you said the Medic can heal/ **revive** people) does that mean revive from the dead, or just from having a very low health bar, and if so, how low and how quickly does the medic have to get to him?

Thanks, that make sense (very nice video by the way) from a squad gameplay point of view, because it gives you the option of reviving a key member of your squad (eg the leader) instead of waiting for him to respawn at the nearest CP and catch up with you. Medic could turn out to be pretty important.
KOiN | Sweden | #302 | 2004-12-13 15:55 (5.7 years ago)
thanks

right and i think that they said something about getting points as medic for revival / healing others or some sort of award to get the class more active in game.

Yeah, I heard that too, I also read a bit in one of the previews that said that if a vehicle has a medic inside it, anyone standing in or near the vehicle will be able to heal (there's a similar feature for the support and engineer classes) and given that they said there aren't going to be any med crates or cabinets this time, every squad will probably have to have at least one medic.

There's a comment in the article that goes "The only thing that can be “deformed” is objects that are part of the game play like bridges, radars etc which will be of great strategic use"

How do the radars fit in to the game? are they for the commander? in the previews that I've read the only abilities I've seen for Commander mode are: "satellite scan, artillery strikes, Predator UAV recon, and supply drops" or are the radars connected to the UAV drones or the artillery in some way?

3. When u sprint...can you fire ..or gun goes down..?

@314

Radars are used by the commander to see everything on the Battlefield, if they are destroyed he can still less. Therefore, they need to be protected.
"@dam" | #318 | 2004-12-17 19:46 (5.7 years ago)

I thought the only way the commander could see everything on the battlefield was to use the satellite scan, or does the satellite scan need the radars in order to work?
"Decimator" | #320 | 2004-12-18 16:37 (5.7 years ago)
Just had another thought/question, do the radars only cover the parts of the battlefield around them?

are there special shader effects for water like in BF:V?
"oaKenfoLd" | #326 | 2004-12-19 17:59 (5.7 years ago)
Excellent job on the preview guys! My friends at work and I have watched the vids approximately 5 times per day..
Just bought my new rig to play this with:
3.6 1026 FSB P4
1gb DDR2 533mHz RAM
ATI Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition
19' digital flat panel
Soundblaster Audigy ZS2(7.1 baby!)
320gb Raid0 Drives

I hope they make BF2 a little more vehicle-centric than BF:V, and a little less vehicle-centric than BF42.
This game will likely be one of those revoltionary steps in gaming, on the scale of CS.

One wonders if clan statistics will be kept alongside with individual stats. It'd be pretty neat to see what the top scoring, healing, flying, and dying clans were.
"oaKenfoLd" | #327 | 2004-12-19 18:06 (5.7 years ago)
One other thing I thought of for a question:

Will guns such as an M60 that have the little legs be able to be rested on things other than the ground?
I always thought it was kind of cheesy that you couldn't set up your MG on that pile of sandbags or the wall up on the roof.
"delta-1-five" | #328 | 2004-12-19 18:14 (5.7 years ago)
During the sprint you cant use your weapons and after the sprint it takes some time till the crosshair retuns to normal.
Most weapons have rate of fire control (single, burst, auto).
For the moment the video card must support 1.6 shader and that 3ghz and 6800 or x800 will run the game great, but it will also run well on slower PC's.
Snipers have camouflage with a scope that is similar to the one in counter-strike.
Assault class has more armor.
Grenades can cause some dammage to tanks.
Medics can revive dead teammates within 10 seconds.
A medic's defibrillator is a one shot kill weapon when used on the enemy.
Anti-tank rockets require some skill to aim and guide the rockets.
"delta-1five" | #329 | 2004-12-19 21:23 (5.7 years ago)
SNIPER:
They can act as forward observers for the commander and can do considerable damage to the infantry. The sniper has a ghillie suit that camouflage him well to his surroundings. US scope resembles the one in counter strike, and the Russian scope resembles to the one in DC only with better resolution. Armed with knife, pistol, rifle with scope, binoculars and smoke grenades.

SF:
Special Force is suited extremely well for taking and defending of flags and buildings. Special Forces are no storm troops and should not go head on against the heavily defended positions. They are good for close combat but not very effective at long range. Special Forces are armed with knife, pistol, MP, C4, and binoculars.
The C4 can get stuck on: building, vehicles and players.

ASSAULT:
Main attack unit. Has body armour meaning he takes less damage than others BUT is not as quick as others (without armour). Armed with knife, pistol and assault weapon with grenade launcher (that can cause damage to tanks and very effective against infantry). Very strong unit but needs to work in cooperation with others to maintain its efficiency (ammo, health…)

SUPPORT:
Armed with machinegun as main weapon and good body armour. Can also give ammo to teammates. When in a vehicle, the vehicle becomes the supply vehicle and people around a certain radius will be get ammo.

ENGINEER:
Can repair vehicles and buildings. Armed with DEFENSIVE weapons (not made to conduct an assault). Can see the damage on things. When in a vehicle, the vehicle becomes the repair vehicle and other units around a certain radius will be repaired.

MEDIC:
Is light and agile. Can distribute health packs and revive dead teammates with defibrillator (within 10 seconds: he can see the countdown on his HUD). Defibrillator becomes a one-shot kill weapon when used on enemy. They are quick but not meant to hold or assault flags. The Medic is equipped with defibrillator, pistol, MP, and Med Pack.
When in a vehicle, everyone around it gets health automatically.

AT:
Armed with knife, pistol and MP. Has a rocket launcher and mines BUT IN SHORT SUPPLY so he has to be close to a support unit. Some skill is needed to aim and guide the rocket. The rockets have a rather high reach and are quite quick. Rockets are effective against infantry and armored vehicles.

Player models are very detailed.

Radio commands are no longer on the F-keys, but selected from an onscreen menu.

Your Field of View is substantially reduced by the Iron sights when you aim.

Players can leave as well as join squads (from a screenshot)

The squad leaders can decide who can join a squad. and unwanted players can vote-kick squad leaders.

Theoretically, a player could form a squad with only himself in it????!?

"Disorganised loners" will have a hard time operating outside a squad becuase they only have Radio Commands to communicate with.

More about the classes

Engineers: (Not sure I've translated this correctly) can rebuild destroyed buildings??????

Medic: Can distribute medpacks which players run over to heal, they can also see the health status of their team mates and where the next nearest team mate that needs healing is.

Anti Tank: Have mines???? (not sure that was translated correctly) they also said that moving targets were hard to hit with the Rocket Launcher, takes a lot of practice.

Great for you people you were invited and had a chance to play the game.
What i would like to ask,how is the gamestyel speed?
Is it just as fast paced like DC,or more like regular BF?
For us old farts whe like things to go a little slower ;-)
DC is just to fast paced for me.

Thanks for reading.

i was wondering with the scaleable maps are the aircraft going to be affected with the OUT OF BOUNDS part if your only on a 16 or 32 player map cause thats going to suck, cause in BF DC Mod I fly around and I'm always hitting the out of bounds part like every 5 sec's, they need to open the maps up just for air support.

iam quite suprised that none have mentioned the feature of c4 body planting "be or not to be". it would be kinnda fun to sneak up on snipers etc. and plant a c4 on his ass, dont you think ?, though for this feature "to be or not to be" is a delicate question. so ill just put it out there.

What do you think about it ?, Dice seemed to hesitate aswell ...

personaly i cant make up my mind about it.

NB, how was that like, did anyone try it ? did it felt overkill or unreal, or just a fun factor to the game ?

"Saint" | #366 | 2005-02-25 13:15 (5.5 years ago)
Just one thing about the recording issue, i assume it works much the same as for many driving games. Instead of recording the actual race it records what everythings doing ie left, right etc.
Now this may theoretically give an exact copy of the race, with active physics in the game. There is nothing that means that if you happened to shoot a man running and he happened to fall in a humorous way. There is nothing to say that he'll fall in exactely the same way in the recording. Same for veichle crashes etc.
Can i get a word on this?
"Squeak" | #367 | 2005-02-25 22:26 (5.5 years ago)

I'm trying to find out if BF2 includes rapelling from blackhawks into tight areas/roof tops where you can't land. On the concept art there were people fast roping, but I haven't seen it since then. We were trying to make a rapelling mod for BF1942-DC, and set the rule that between a certain low height and speed range, the pilot could press dive/submerge, at which time the camera went to overhead mode, a rope dropped out each side, and the helo was locked to strict height and speed restrictions. At that stage two new vehicle position boxes became available and people could press them to be put onto what was actually a ladder but looked like a rope (we found auto rapelling worked much better though, where once you are on the rope you can't do anything but enjoy the ride, that way you could have 3 people on each rope at the same time). Anyway, I can't find a way to ask/suggest this to EA, so if anyone here can it would be appreciated. Thanks fellas, keep up the good work. SR.
TNT | Finland | #379 | 2005-03-11 23:22 (5.5 years ago)
#374; Try it by yourself when the demo arrives in April (?).

#378; If I remember right, there won't be rappelling, because it would take too much work to make it look good and act realistic at the same time for a quite small use. The picture you saw was just early concept art brought in by the DC team.
"@dam" | #380 | 2005-03-14 04:59 (5.5 years ago)
So instead we will be left with the more realistic ability to jump from 20 feet and use a parachute. Wicked!

TNT | Finland | #410 | 2005-03-31 19:14 (5.4 years ago)
That question has been already answered by a DICE developer, Andreas Johansson ( or was it Johan Andersson? only god knows. )

I think it was some technical difficulties. But then again: This might have changed because of the delayed launch of the game.
